![]() Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth…Why was I not hidden in the ground like a stillborn child–like an infant who never saw the light of day…For sighing comes to me instead of food my groans pour out like water. There is no contradiction between being a person of great faith and a person of great despair at the same time. Job 3: Descent into DepressionĮven the godly can be depressed. Mourn and receive comfort for your hurts and live on. There are trials we endure that we do not deserve. Sometimes the best comfort is when someone puts their arms around us and never says a word. Satan can’t touch us unless God lowers the hedge. We face an unseen, god-hating enemy who would love to destroy us. Be alert! Many of our troubles are the result of the spiritual battles behind the scenes. The Lord can give and the Lord can take away. ![]() Unfortunately, when they spoke, they switched from their comforting intentions to massive condemnation. ![]() Then, at a loss for words, they sit and stare wordlessly for seven days. First, they don’t recognize him, which tells us something of the swelling and sores all over him. Three friends arrive with plans to comfort him. ![]() Shall we accept good from God and not trouble? In all this Job did not sin with what he said. Job replied, “You are talking like a foolish woman. Then, his wife taunted, “Why don’t you just curse God and die?” He is left penniless, homeless, helpless, childless-and healthless. In a quick and brutal sweep of calamities, allowed by God, but engineered by Satan, Job is reduced to a twisted mass of brokenness and grief. He took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself as he sat among the ashes in the garbage dump. Satan afflicted him with painful sores from the bottom of his feet to the top of his head. God said, “All right, do with him as you please but you cannot kill him.” Stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse you to your face.” Satan replied, “Skin for skin! A man will give all that he has to save his life. God said to Satan, “Job kept his integrity and refused to curse me, even though you incited me against him.” Job fell to his knees in worship and said, “The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away blessed be the name of the Lord.” Instead of cursing God, he blessed him. In rapid succession Job loses his sheep, servants, oxen, donkeys, camels and all of his children. God says, “Okay, I’ll take the challenge I’ll take down my hedge of protection and you may strike everything he has but on the man himself, do not lay a finger.” Take away everything he has and he will curse you to your face.” Satan replied, “Job only loves you because of all the things you give him. God says to Satan: “There is no one on earth like him he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.” God asks Satan if he’s noticed his servant, Job. The First Two Chapters of Job: ‘The Test’ I think it will help if I overview the book and draw some lessons. ![]() Among other things, it deals with the age-old question of why good people suffer.īut, there’s a lot more than that to the book of Job. Many are the reasons why the book of Job should be in the Bible. I stopped reading about the middle of chapter five. That was the worst advice I’ve ever gotten. I’ve been having some really serious health problems and one of my Christian friends recommended that I read the book of Job. ![]()
